What in the World Happened Today
Language and Literacy, Social and Emotional
As we read with children in small groups and individually, we introduce children to new vocabulary and boost language comprehension by reading the words and talking about what we see in the illustrations. In today’s book, we explored books featuring all types of children who are similar to us and who are different. This offers children opportunities to see themselves and others represented through books, helping them to understand that we are all special people.
Language and Literacy, Visual and Creative Arts
Singing songs with movement helps children develop large and small motor skills. The Wheels on the Bus focuses on movements that help children develop upper body strength. In addition, the repetition of the lyrics allows the children to predict what will come next and they will be more likely to join in with sounds and body motions.

STEM
Comparing objects: sound : We encourage children to notice and compare objects by their attributes by listening to their sounds. As we explore objects with children, we talk about what items are made of, their shapes, and more. They we let children experiment to see what they sound like when tapped, rapped, or dropped. This experience introduced new vocabulary to children, encouraged focus and attention to details, and promoted cause and effect learning.
Language and Literacy, Social and Emotional
Exploring musical genres : We're exploring art and culture by listening to different genres of music. As children listen, we describe what they hear and offer ways that they could move to the music. Describing how the music makes us feel and modeling ways to move to it invites children to participate in music in an interactive way.
STEM
Tracing and stamping in sand : Children use their fingers to trace in sand. Tracing in sand is a sensory-rich, and often soothing, experience for children. As children trace, they develop hand-eye coordination, learn new vocabulary related to texture, and engage in Daily Sensory Experiences, one of our Bright Horizons signature practices.
